A Willoughby City Council initiative – Time to Grow is a program connecting Seniors who have some garden space to share with volunteer gardeners interested in growing fresh food. We provide a free raised garden bed for participating residents and we screen volunteers in the same way as Council screens volunteers for Meals on Wheels and our other aged care services.
Volunteers visit for an hour a week to maintain the shared garden beds and share the fresh produce harvested. We consult with residents on their preferred location for the garden bed, their preferred visiting times and what they would like to grow together. We run free gardening workshops teaching organic gardening principles to participants.
Residents must be Seniors living within the Willoughby City Council LGA to participate and receive a free garden bed, and they must understand this is a sharing arrangement with the volunteer entitled to a share of the fresh produce.
